Dr. Oz's Findings on Apple Juice Confirmed
A recent investigation by Consumer Reports appears to confirm the findings of the Empire State study and the studies commissioned by Dr. Oz. It found that ten percent of the juice samples they tested had arsenic that exceeded the federal drinking water standard and one in four had lead levels higher than the FDA limits for bottled water. The findings have prompted the Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, to urge the FDA to set arsenic and lead standards for apple and grape juice so that people can be assured that they are drinking healthy beverages. Several months ago we reported on a study by the Empire State Consumer project that revealed alarming high levels of arsenic and heavy metals in apple juice, especially apple juice imported from China. Dr. Mehmet Oz reported on similar findings at the time and both the FDA and the apple juice industry responded vigorously that any arsenic levels were minimal and of no threat to human health.
